To the moon and stars: Fatima bint Abdel Moneim Al Sheikh
Are you intrigued to get your name up in the Milky Way? Common, is that even a question to ask? It’s no surprise that from a really young age, we are all fascinated by the twinkling of stars, the sight of an eclipse and sometimes even chased the moon as it hid behind buildings. Humans have been associated with astronomy since centuries. The ancient travellers would follow the trail of stars to reach their destination and look for guidance in them. Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and phenomena. It uses mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to explain their origin and evolution.
Women in astronomy is not a new thing to hear about but the story of Fatima is an exciting one. She is an inspiration for women around the world who has proved through her excellence that women can conquer any domain of life with persistent determination and integrity . She has achieved an astounding feat at a tender age of 19.
Fatima bint Abdel Moneim Al Sheikh is a young Saudi scientist who has done wonders and even went on to have an asteroid named after her. She is a living example of the fact that no obstacle or hurdle can deter her from standing shoulder to shoulder with men or even ahead.
NASA has honoured her by naming an asteroid as Al Sheikh 33535 in recognition of her effort in the field of astronomy.
Fatima had submitted a research paper titled “ Determining The Effect of The Novel Carl 2 Strigolactone Analog on The Seed Germination of Parasitic Weeds” at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in 2016. Intel ISEF is held annually by the Society for the Science and the Public that attracts large crowds of students from around the globe to compete in the world’s largest pre- college science competition.
Fatima Al Sheikh has been awarded both nationally as well as internationally.
