NCRB: Delhi tops in crimes against women
New Delhi : Latest National Crime Records Bureau data shows Delhi contributed to one in every three crimes against women in 2016. And also with a crime rate of 182.1 crimes per one lakh population, according to the latest data released by the NCRB.
Crimes against women have only marginally decreased between 2014 and 2016, dropping by 0.14%. Lucknow, with 159.8 crimes, and Jaipur at 144.1 crimes against every one lakh people, came second and third on the list. The national average of crimes against women in cities was 77.2.
The national capital has got the dubious distinction of topping the list in cases of murder, kidnapping and abduction, juveniles in conflict and economic offences. Delhi reported 33% (13,803 cases out of total 41,761 cases in 19 cities) of total crimes against women, followed by Mumbai at 12.3% (5,128 cases) last year among the 19 cities with population above two million.
Most such cases were reported under the category “Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives”, followed by “Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage Her Modesty” and “Kidnapping and Abduction of Women”.
According to NCRB data released on last week Delhi contributed one in every three cases of all the crimes against women that happened in metropolitan cities and 4% of all the such cases in the country, with 13,803 cases. This is higher than the 13,260 cases reported in 2014.
This year Delhi also bagged another notorious feather in its hat as it contributed the maximum percentage of crime to the statistics collated from the 19 metropolitan cities that include Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow.
